As I followed the recent news about Harold Camping and his false prophecy, I couldn’t help but wonder what God’s plan was for Mr. Camping and his followers. In years past, we’ve watched these teachers of false doctrine go down in flames, from convincing their followers to commit suicide to making a stand against the government through violence (ala David Koresh).
Most Christians watch these cultists and think about how sad it is they were deceived, but then figure they get what they deserve for believing a lie.
I feel like God wants to do something different in this situation. After the end times prophecy did not come true, Mr. Camping was obviously stunned and humbled by his “miscalculation.”
I believe that through this situation, God wants to bring about a hopeful restoration for those who believed this deception from the enemy. As a “good” Christian its easy to dismiss Harold Camping as a false prophet and his followers as misguided people, but I believe that Jesus wants to restore his hope and faith.
What if God wants to use this as an opportunity to show Mr. Camping and his followers that the Lion of the Tribe of Judah is coming back in all His fullness, but He’s coming back for a beautiful bride, filled with many nations, tribes, and tongues, not just a select few?
Let’s believe in the hopeful restoration of Harold Camping and his followers instead of allowing our “Christian” judgments to get in the way of our love for them.
